We had a new winner in the race for the first time in four years with Rite Of Passage claiming the win for Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen. He held off the game Age Of Aquarius over the final couple of furlongs while Purple Moon was back in third place with Kieren Fallon board.

Yeats and Johnny Murtagh created history with a third Gold Cup victory in a row to continue a magnificent week for Murtagh and trainer Aidan O'Brien. Murtagh had Yeats well placed from the start as Le Miracle and Coastal Path set the piece but Murtagh mounted a serious challenge over the last half-mile as Yeats and Coastal Path pulled away.

The Gold Cup was all about Yeats and he did not disappoint with Mick Kinane giving him a perfect ride coming to take it up at the two furlong mark and only for a second did Geordieland threaten to make a challenge but when Yeats saw him coming just went on again to take the Ascot Gold Cup for a second year at a very short price. Sergeant Cecil was a big disappointment coming home well down the field.

One of the feature races of the whole of Royal Ascot and this win will have given trainer Aiden O'brien much pleasure as there was doubts about Yeats' stamina but this proved unfounded as he won by a decent four lengths.

Westerner is just sheer class and he was at his very best to win this great renewal for this fantastic race. Westerner travelled superbly well through the race and as he did not want to front to soon and jockey Olivier Peslier rode a brilliant race on him by twice taking a pull in the straight before eventually leading 1f out and just as well as he was nearly caught by the runner up Distinction close to the line.
